BPSA, comprising South Africa and Mozambique, has been operating for over 100 years in the downstream market and has a variety of businesses which comprise oil and gas exploration, crude oil importation, aviation fuel, lubricants and refining as well as marketing.
The refined products are marketed across domestic, commercial, retail, manufacturing, industrial and logistics customers. These products make up BP’s core brands.
BPSA is headquartered in Rosebank, Johannesburg.

BPSA has over 500 branded service stations across South Africa.
It also has 50% equity, together with Shell Southern Africa (Proprietary) Limited, in Sapref, one of the largest refineries in Africa. Sapref was commissioned in 1967 and is situated in Durban, South Africa.
BP Ultimate Fuels
BP Ultimate Fuels is our flagship fuel product. Its engine performance enhancing properties have earned it several accolades, notably the prestigious South African Product of the Year 2017. Additionally, in 2019, BP Ultimate Fuels won awards – the Ask Afrika Icon Brands which surveys and “measures brand relevance across all segments of the South African demographic” as well as the Ask Afrika Kasi Star Brands which measures preferences and brand loyalty amongst township consumers. We also achieved the coveted Platinum Iconic Brand status in the fuel category.
Having won Platinum in the coveted Ask Afrika Brands awards, BP Ultimate Fuels have lived up to its quality promise of enhancing engine performance and becoming the preferred fuel product amongst many South African consumers.
Fuels Technology Centre
The Fuels Technology Centre in Kyalami, Johannesburg, South Africa is an innovative testing and calibration laboratory which provides quality assurance and differentiated fuel products. It is one of only 4 globally belonging to BP and the first in Africa.
The Fuels Technology Centre conducts quality assurance analyses of petroleum, diesel, paraffin and aviation fuel products as well as treated effluent water.
The cutting-edge laboratory is ISO 17025 compliant and accredited.
The team at the laboratory has in excess of a cumulative 40 years’ experience amongst them.
Retail Convenience Stores
BP, in addition to its over 500 retail fuel stations, provides convenience through its BP Express and Pick n Pay Express retail stores and Wild Bean Café coffee shop, all of which stores operate on a 24-hour basis.
The BP Express stores continue to play a significant part of the convenience offering and is targeted for smaller stores and compliment the Pick n Pay Express portfolio. The BP Express shop branding has won a number of accolades, most recently the Garage Convenience Shops category at the 2019/2020 Ask Afrika Icon Brand awards.
Pick n Pay Express
In 2012, BPSA partnered with Pick n Pay to convert approximately 200 BP Express stores to Pick n Pay stores over a period of five years.
The conversion was primarily aimed at fuel stations most suitably located for Pick ‘n Pay customers and was aligned with BPSA’s growth and investment strategy.
To date, this strategic partnership has grown to over 155 Pick n Pay Express stores at BP service stations across South Africa. In 2018, this strategic partnership was extended to include the Smart Shopper loyalty programme enabling Pick n Pay customers an added leverage to earn and spend points every time they refuel at BP.
Wild Bean Café
In 2019, the Wild Bean Café coffee brand, which offers coffee, pastries and confectionaries, marked its eighteenth anniversary in South Africa.
Wild Bean Café has become a staple for South African consumers, so much so, that in 2018 alone, 8.9 million cups of coffee were sold – a remarkable achievement, both from a marketing return on investment and profitability perspective. Wild Bean Café was rated as one of the country’s coolest brands by a leading consumer survey in South Africa.
In addition to Pick n Pay, BPSA has strategic partnerships with Discovery Credit Card, Discovery Insure and Absa Bank allowing consumers to earn points and other benefits which has significantly enhanced our customer value proposition and increased footfall to our service stations. Through these shared value partnerships, customers enjoy benefits in the form of loyalty points and rewards.
When filling up at a BP service station, customers can earn Discovery miles through the Discovery Credit Card. Discovery Insure members can earn up to 50% cash back on their fuel spend. In order to create an integrated full-site experience, customers can also earn Smart Shopper points when they spend at Pick n Pay Express stores nationally.
In addition, BP has partnered with Absa to design an innovative smart card solution, the BP FleetMove card. This is the ideal card offer for a small vehicle fleet, designed to take advantage of BP’s network, fuel expertise and quality. It offers customers benefits like controlled spending, adding value, fuel expertise, and time save.
In 2019, BP extended its long-standing partnership with Masana Petroleum solutions to deliver yet another innovative fleet management solution, BP FleetMove powered by Masana for larger fleets, and is designed to improve operational and cost efficiency, as well as productivity using technology.
Castrol is BP’s lubricant brand.
Castrol is the world’s leading manufacturer and distributor of premium lubricating oils and related services to the automotive and industrial sectors in over 50 countries in Africa.
Castrol has won several awards. In 2016, Castrol’s pioneering oil technology saw Castrol MAGNATEC 10W-40 win the South African Product of the Year award in the motor lubricant category, and in 2018 Castrol MAGNATEC won the South African Product of the Year award for most innovative motor lubricant in the fuels category.
Castrol works with leading industry car manufacturers, supplying a broad range of lubricants designed for particular operating conditions and environments. Many of our Castrol products are recommended by, and co-engineered with major car manufacturers including Audi, Ford, MAN, Honda, Volvo, JLR, Tata, Renault and Volkswagen.
Air BP is the aviation division of BP and is one of the world's leading suppliers of aviation fuel products and services. Air BP’s services include the design, build and operation of fuelling facilities, technical consultancy and training, supporting customers to meet their lower carbon goals through environmental solutions, the Sterling Card for efficient refuelling and innovative digital platform to increase efficiency and reduce risk.
Furthermore, Air BP provides technical services and our expertise is focused on achieving safe and reliable operations. Our strength and technology have been proven in managing some of the largest into-place fueling services at OR Tambo and Cape Town International Airports.
Air BP has received accolades at George Airport and Cape Town International Airport. The awards are proffered by Airports Company South Africa (“ACSA”) annually for excellent performance and good safety records at airports within South Africa over which ACSA has oversight.
Globally, Air BP fuels over 6 000 flights a day at over 900 locations in more than 55 countries. Its customers include commercial airlines, the military, business and private aircraft owners, airports and airfield operators. Air BP’s presence in Africa grew in 2018, to almost 40 locations with the addition of six locations in Mauritius, Ivory Coast, Cape Verde and Morocco.
BP Marine provides supply and services to consumers at the maritime port facilities through reliance upon its extensive infrastructure.
It currently operates two barges (small in port tankers which take fuel products from a shore tank and deliver to a customer ship) in Durban, South Africa, operated through BEE compliant companies. These companies deliver approximately 35KT of fuel products per month. Furthermore, in Richard’s Bay, South Africa, BP Marine also uses two barges through a BEE compliant company which delivers approximately 20KT of fuel per month.
We also deliver diesel by road freight in the ports of Durban and Cape Town. BP Marine uses level 2 BEE entities, delivering 3KT/ month of BP fuels. BP Marine is upscaling its participation in Cape Town by introducing a barge which will be operated by one of the BEE compliant entities with whom it has a relationship above and will deliver at least 10KT/month.
